Oliver! is a beautiful, classic musical and is a GREAT ensemble show. There are many different characters, so everyone will have lines.
It is in your best interest to memorize your audition songs. It is easier for us to see your personality and talents when your face isn’t hidden behind a paper and being prepared shows you take the audition seriously. We are so excited about this show- so much fun and such gorgeous music!OLIVER! CHARACTER BREAKDOWN:
Oliver: A orphan workhouse boy, smooth boyish soprano, British (not cockney) accent, sweet, bright and innocent. Large role-this character is in approximately 80% of the scenes.Nancy: When she was younger worked for Fagin, now a barmaid, she is an excellent singer with a strong chest mix and should have decent movement skills. Cockney accent. She is pretty, intelligent but a victim, longs for a better life. Lives with and loves Bill Sikes. Fagin: Middle aged leader of a children’s band of thieves, Cockney accent. Described as devious, a user, sly fox, con man, very personable. Large role for a great character actor. Madame Thenardier typeArtful Dodger: A street kid, singer/actor. Cockney accent. Very energetic, charming and highly personable, intelligent and savvy beyond his years, Fagin’s right hand “man”. Bill Sikes: Also worked for Fagin as a youth- now a feared master criminal (baritone). Cockney accent. Good looking in a rough sort of way, sociopath, a killer who only looks out for himself.Mr. Bumble: The Master of the Workhouse, high tenor, Cockney accent. A large, pompous and corrupt bureaucrat. Widow Corney: The Mistress of the Workhouse, (soprano) Cockney accent. Sharp tongued widow, also corrupt.Bet: Nancy's friend, also worked for Fagin, should be a very strong singer and move very well. Cockney accent. She idolizes Nancy.Charley Bates: Artful Dodger's pal (can be female)Mr/Mrs. Sowerberry undertaker, Cockney accent. Kind of creepy, “buys” Oliver from Bumble to work in the funeral home as a coffin follower.Mrs. Scarboro: The undertaker’s sister, age range 30-45, actress/singer (mezzo). Cockney accent. More business savvy than her brother/sister.Noah Claypole: Undertaker’s apprentice, age range 18-25, actor. Cockney accent. May have also come from Workhouse. Feels threatened by, dislikes and torments Oliver.Charlotte: Sowerberry’s daughter, age range 16-21, actress. Cockney accent. Attracted to Noah, kind of flirty.Mrs. Brownlow: Older woman, age range 40-60, actor/singer. British (not cockney) accent. Kind upper class gentlewoman, Oliver’s grandmotherDr. Grimwig: A doctor, age range 35-55, actor. British (not cockney) accent. Upper class, friend of Mrs. Brownlow.Mrs. Bedwin: A housekeeper, age range 35-55. British (not cockney) accent. Works for Mr. Brownlow.
